Initiatives
The Homeless Action Center started as a storefront in Berkeley with one attorney and one advocate in 1990. HAC now has offices in Berkeley and Oakland and a staff of more than 50 attorneys and advocates. In 2020, HAC celebrated its 30th Anniversary.
HAC plays a critical role in the fight to reduce and end homelessness. To keep HAC prepared for future challenges, significant capacity-building initiatives include:
- Specialized staff focusing on housing opportunities
- Continued expansion of our pro bono and internship programs
- Policy Team that develops and explains models for successful programs to address specific homelessness issues
- Comprehensive and intensive staff training
- Salaries that are competitive with other Bay Area legal services programs
- Upgrades in case management and record-keeping technology
- Rainy Day Reserve Fund
